Brief Introduction of Beijing Municipal Geriatric Medical Research Center

Beijing Municipal Geriatric Medical Research Center (BGRC), the first Beijing municipal research institution which included both a hospital and research center, is excellent in the diagnosis and treatment of, as well as education and research concerning senile diseases. In January 1985, it was approved by the Beijing municipal government, funded by the National Planning Commission and chartered under the auspices of Xuanwu Hospital. In 2010, BGRC officially became a fully funded institution with the approval of the Beijing City Organization Committee. In addition to the central laboratory, BGRC includes research labs for neurobiology, cell biology, pharmacology, cerebrovascular diseases, experimental animals, clinical work, and the Cochrane center.

BGRC focuses on senile diseases, their pathogenesis, diagnosis, and prevention, especially relating to neurology. It is strong in the studies of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, cerebrovascular disease, and geriatric epidemiology, and is well-known throughout the country for its leadership in research. In the 1990s, BGRC was funded by project P23 of the United Nations Population Fund for a longitudinal multi-approaches study of aging in Beijing, and also project MCD-5 of the International Cultural Exchange Center World Laboratory for epidemiological investigation of common senile diseases. It also participated in multiple national research programs, such as “973” and “863” , the key scientific projects of the national 10th, 11th and 12th five-year plans, as well as the National Sci-Tech Support Plan and special funds of the National Ministry of Health, National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Ministry of Education, and the Beijing S&T commission. Besides these, BGRC was granted multiple research achievement awards including national S&T Progress Award 2nd class, Beijing S&T Award 1st class, and S&T Progress Award 2nd class of the National Ministry of Education. BGRC has held more than 40 national and international patents.

BGRC has continuously built and strengthened the discipline, construction and innovation of its research teams. Since 1996, it has established eight major laboratories affiliated to a province or ministry. Established research centers include the Beijing Key Laboratory for Brain Aging and the Key Laboratory for Neurodegenerative Diseases supported by the Ministry of Education. In this work BGRC has promoted the clinical and basic research of senile diseases, development of new technologies, and application of research findings. BGRC has masters, Ph.D. and post-doctoral training programs in senile diseases. Numerous students and professionals have been trained in senile diseases research for the nation.

As a supported institution by Beijing Geriatric Healthcare Center, BGRC has undertaken a large number of public welfare cases, such as assisting the government with the management of Beijing elderly care service system and epidemiological investigation, which provided an important basis for the making and planning of national health policy.

BGRC has communicated and cooperated extensively with international organizations like the World Health Organization and United Nations Population Fund, and prestigious universities and research institutions worldwide, from such places as the USA, Japan, Italy, Canada, France, German, Australia, Sweden and the Netherlands.
